For all film buffs and culture vultures!! - German Culture and Film - 2012 programme
Now in our FOURTH season,German Culture and Film at SMH Studienzentrum have a new and exciting programme for 2012.
Please pass our information on to your friends and associates by printing and posting the attached flyer.
February 2nd brings a return to Fassbinder in Die Ehe Der Maria Braun (The Marriage of Maria Braun). This 1979 masterpiece is considered Fassbinder's most successful international film and looks at the German post-war experience from a feminist viewpoint. "A heartbreaking study of a woman picking herself up from the ruins of her own life, as well as a pointed metaphorical attack on a society determined to forget its past." What would we do without Fassbinder?
On March 8th we'll discuss Cabaret, Bob Fosse's 1972 musical exploration of 1930's Berlin during the Weimar Republic. Not a German film, you might say but it is a fascinating and compelling adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's The Berlin Stories, considered by many to be one of the finest English language novels of the 20th century. Set in 1930's Berlin, in a society in decay, the film revolves around a cast of characters at risk from Nazi intimidation. The film won eight Academy Awards in 1973 and without a doubt it is well worth watching.
March 22nd - Rosenstrasse Margarethe von Trotta's study of the Rosenstrasse protests in 1943 Berlin by the non-Jewish wives of Jewish detainees. The film explores a little-known, and uncommon act of resistance against Nazi policy.
On April 19th we'll be treated to a second American treatment of German history in Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three, the comedic tale of an American executive with Coca Cola in 1960's Germany.. Set in West Berlin during the Cold War but before the wall was built, it is a surprisingly political film.
May 3rd brings us back to Berlin with Der getelite Himmel (Divided Heaven) a 1963 film from East Germany by Konrad Wolf and based on his wife, Crista Wolf's novel. This little-known film is considered "perhaps the best German film since the War" and will be one which inspires a lot of analysis and discussion.
On May 24th we'll see Das Versprechen (The Promise) again from the prolific Margarethe von Trotta. This 1995 film is set around the Berlin Wall and tells the story of two lovers who are separated by its construction. Von Trotta used actors from both east and west, seeking to bring the former East and West Germany together, while exploring what kept them apart.

SMH studienzentrum - Special language programme offer for ESK pupils and parents
SMH studienzentrum was established in Mannheim in 2005 and has now expanded throughout the region. Our primary objective is to encourage and develop our students' speaking and comprehension skills and to enable them to function confidently in their language of choice. SMH specialises in individual and small-group classes for businesses and individuals.
SMH studienzentrum offers the following program for ESK students and parents. We have worked with ESK students since opening our Karlsruhe office in 2009. Our experience in working with students in L1, L2 and L3 German, English and French classes has given SMH a solid understanding of the specific needs of children adapting to a multi-lingual, multi-cultural academic environment.
It is our objective to provide exciting and interesting learning opportunities that support ESK students’ regular class work as well as their long-term scholastic goals. Age and ability grouping will depend on the number of students enrolled in each class.
Contact us by email at esk@smh-studienzentrum.de for further information and for our terms and conditions and registration forms.

Welcome to the American Library!
Like a typical public library in America, Karlsruhe’s American Library offers a full range of more than 32.000 books and other media: fiction (classic works as well as bestsellers), non-fiction, children’s books, audio books, music CDs, videos and DVDs. The collection is constantly updated to meet the needs of its German and international users.
The library is unique in Germany, not only as an English language library but because of the support of the Friends of the American Library, a nonprofit organization that provides a large part of the new books and other media. The Friends also work as volunteers behind the counter and help organize readings, discussion groups, storytimes for children and other events.
The library’s opening hours are:
